I am not liking this scraping/grinding noise at idle. I am quite worried about it, in fact.

Judging solely on it’s cadence I dont think it’s internal...too slow. I would guess an accessory or something as simple as debris in the belt path. Edit, oitcould be valve related

Then I’m going to go with some accessory.

Do you know if the water pump is driven by the cam chain or if it’s a separate accessory? The water pump will be a clunking sound if it’s bad. The power steering pump should be a pretty consistent higher pitched whining. That leaves AC condenser or alternator.

That said, if it’s the timing chain or related tensioners, you need to look into the class action lawsuit and see if it’s possible to cash in on some free service. When I see my sister later tonight, I can ask her about what went on with hers, but she bought an extended warranty. My friend’s shop did the work on it, and the bill was ultimately covered by BMW. My sister has an 09 Cooper 6spd, and the issue happened last August if my memory is anything to be trusted. From what I do remember, an insurance adjuster was sent out from Zurich to assess the car and determine eligibility. Not the best thing to go through, but I never heard the car running, I just know it was not a pleasant or welcome sound.

My year is not eligible for the tensioner recall.

The water pump is a gear-driven unit mounted to the back of the supercharger. Car is not overheating.
